We are only a couple days away from the event! We're going to have some amazing food courtesy of Aaron Adams and Rebekah Bellingham (with plenty of vegan offerings) and some delicous, refreshing and tasty Laurelwood beer (I love how it makes me feel), all for free! Our neighbors just down the street, Laurelwood Brewpub, have generously donated two kegs of beer! We will proudly be serving one keg of their Golden and one of their Red.

Laurelwood beer is kind of a staple for us 'round these parts. We're there most days for happy hour, along with some days for lunch. There's nothing better than happy hour after work. You know what they say...you're not clocked out until you've had your first sip.

Remember, the event is free to attend, and it's free to partake in the food and beverages (but we will of course accept donations). Please remember to drink responsibly, and if you are going to drink, try to ride your bike or take public transportation when you're done.

I've been meeting with Rebekah and Aaron, who are preparing the food for the evening, and they are really on top of their stuff. I can't wait to eat!

In other news, Aaron's brother is also coming through with a great prize. Jeremy owns this great little cafe in SE, on 11th and Harrison, called Cellar Door. He roasts his own stuff, makes great 'spro, and a mean quiche. And he's just a funny, funny dude. He's kicking in a couple bags of coffee and a french press! You can never have too much coffee...

Also, we're getting a couple bags from Banjo Bros. These are great bags for a great price, and they're an even better price if you win them! Eric from Banjo Bros. is donating a messenger laptop bag as well as a commuter backpack.

I truly have to express how I am amazed at the amount of support that the cycling community and the community at large is giving to this event. Working on this fundraiser can be a bit draining at times, but it always makes me feel better to stop and think about how much everyone is willing to contribute. The prizes for the drawings keep coming in. John Grochau of GC wines (that's Grochau Cellars) has donated a magnum. For those of you that are uninitiated in wine drinking, that's a double bottle. Look it up on wikipedia (I had to). I've never tried it, as I'm best known for clutching a bottle of Charles Shaw wrapped in a brown paper bag, but our mutual friend Corey loves his stuff, and a quick google search yields lots of great review of his stuff like this one.

Another great local business donating some goods is Courier Coffee. This small, two-man operation is getting a lot of press these days and selling at some of the better restaurants and cafes around town. Matt is a great guy (he's only the second-in-charge though, I don't know the owner Joel), they roast great coffee, and it's all delivered by bike. Cool, huh?

Finally, we're getting a Haro Nyquist BMX bike too! This is going in the "smaller" drawing, so even if you don't win a Signal or a Veloforma, you can still leave the event on two wheels! (Or four, if you rode there to begin with.)

I got a call from local racer Brian Engelen who is donating a bunch of these really cool reflective stickers. My roommate, Shaft, runs these on his sweet Vanilla single speed cyclocross commuter, and they're a really fun way to add a bit of safety to your nighttime rides. Thanks Brian!

We also got 3 (three) one hundred dollar ($100) gift certificates to Higgins restaurant donated to the drawing. Higgins boasts one of, if not the, most amazing beer menus in Portland. They even have Pabst! But seriously, if you've never been, this is one of the best restaurants in Portland. Great beer, great wine, great food, and great service, and Skerritt's favorite burger in the city. I'm kind of hoping I win one of these... Thanks to Jason and the whole Higgins crew!

Tori Bortman of the Downtown Bike Gallery has donated a gift certificate to her night job. She is the founder, owner, CEO, CFO, president, employee, and sits on the board of trustees for Gracie's Wrench, designed to teach people how to work on their own bikes. She has a lot of experience, teaching all over town at "the Center for Appropriate Transport, the Community Cycling Center, the Bicycle Transportation Alliance, North Portland Bikeworks, Bike Gallery and the City of Portland".

Tori has generously donated a gift certificate for a two hour tutoring session. Come win the prize and learn how to fix your own bike!

Drawing for the Signal and Veloforma

Finally, the details for the drawing for the grand prizes are available. One drawing will be run, with two winners, for the custom Signal and the Veloforma frames. The tickets are only $25 ($26 if you buy online to cover the Paypal fees). Only tickets for the frames will be presold, and if there are any left over, they will be sold the night of the event as well. There are two ways to buy a ticket:

We've got some great prizes to add to the list for the raffle.

First off we have a private yoga class by Ellee Thalheimer for you and a friend, or up to 8 people if you can provide the space. She's really into cycling and even teaches a cycling-specific class at River City Bicycles. Check out her website here.

Speaking of River City, one of their fitters, cyclocrosser, 29er, my housemate, and all around nice redhead Dani Dance has offered up a full body bike fitting as a raffle prize. I've ridden with Dani quite a bit, and she looks really comfortable on her bike, so I'd definitely trust her to fit me. While she's really good at fitting (and riding) all types of bikes, her specialty is the commuter fit, so if you're in discomfort on your way to work this is the prize for you!

Another great prize we have is from a new Portland clothing manufacturer, Wabi Woolens. Harth from Wabi is donating a locally made wool jersey, in the size and color of your choice. I saw some of his stuff at the handbuilt bike show, and it's really top-notch stuff. Thanks for the great donation, Harth!

In other news, I'm going to give instructions on how to buy raffle tickets before the fundraiser shortly. A few details are still being ironed out, but you can win either a custom Signal or an Italian made Veloforma for a mere $25! Check back soon!

Portland State University Cycling Team and Bike Gallery Team-up to Raise Money for Bike Safety Education.

Portland, Oregon- May 1, 2008, 7 pm .The Portland State University Cycling team, in conjunction with the Bike Gallery, is hosting an event the evening of May 1st, 2008, to raise money and raise awareness for the Brett Jarolimek Memorial Fund, created in the honor of a dear friend, Portland resident, cyclist, and artist, Brett Jarolimek.

Money donated to the memorial fund will help 1) enhance motorist awareness and education, 2) enhance the awareness, visibility and education of bicyclists, and 3) enable bicycle safety infrastructure projects on a selected basis.

The free event, which will be held at Downtown Bike Gallery, located at 1001 SW 10th Ave, Portland, will host a raffle with contributions from Signal Cycles(signalcycles.com) and Veloforma (veloforma.com), two Portland area bicycle frame companies. A silent auction will also feature local art, and donations from local businesses. Attendees will also have the opportunity to share their ideas for bike safety campaigns and projects.

Free beer, wine, and food will be available, with catering provided by Rebekah Bellingham of Sugar Beets (www.goodfoodtoeat.com) and vegan chef Aaron Adams.

Bike Frames

Two local bicycle companies have generously donated bicycle frames to be raffled off at the fundraiser! Check out http://www.signalcycles.com/ and http://www.veloforma.com/.

Signal is providing a custom frame with a basic tubeset and 2 tone paint job, retail value of $1500. Upgrades are available but must be negotiated with the builders

And the Veloforma Ultra frameset, a top-end, Italian made carbon frame courtesy of Mark Duff at Veloforma, a $2000 value:
